Most Popular Development Language?

I've often asked this question - "What IS the most popular development language right now?"  Antonio Cangiano attempts to answer this question using the Amazon sales rankings on various technical books.  You can find the results of his "study" here.

I found it an interesting read.  Winning by a landslide was Javascript.  That makes sense to me as AJAX is all the rage these days and every server-side web language requires it for client-side operations.  I think some of the rankings were skewed as many of the books on the list are required by colleges and universities as textbooks.  I wish there was a way for Amazon to track the purpose of each purchase.  The categories could be something like:

  • Required for Educational Institution.
  • Personal Study
  • Work Study
  • Gift

Also, the fact that many of the best tutorials are those available on the web - and I know people use those to learn - it also might be interesting to get the site traffic reports on various programming learning sites.

Even after mentioning all of that, though, I can believe that this is an indicator of the trends in the development world right now.  In the top 5, you have two global languages (javascript and SQL).  The other items in the top 5 are the current fads of the moment.

Also, Frank Kelly has an interesting entry here that talks about how NOT to develop in Java.  After reading the list, though, I realized that none of the items he mentions is truly JAVA specific.  I believe that all of the items could be related to each and every programming language out there.
